A Dialogue with Materials

At Quizchul, we believe that creating with natural materials is a form of conversation—a reciprocal exchange between maker and medium. The clay speaks of earth and time; the wool whispers of animal warmth; the timber echoes forest stories.

When we listen closely to these voices, our creations become more authentic, more alive. This guide explores the distinctive qualities of our core materials and how they might invite you into dialogue.

Our Core Materials

Various clay types with different textures and earth tones

Clay & Ceramics

Earth's memory made malleable, clay invites direct connection with the ancient elements. We work primarily with:

  • Australian terracotta (earthy warmth, distinctive red-orange hue)
  • White stoneware (versatile, smooth texture, takes glazes beautifully)
  • Raku clay (resilient through dramatic temperature changes, creates distinctive crackling)

Each clay body offers different possibilities for texture, color, and form—from smooth polished vessels to rough, tactile surfaces that record the maker's touch.

Collection of natural fibers including jute, wool, and cotton

Natural Fibers

Fibers connect us to ancient human traditions of gathering, spinning, and weaving. Our work features:

  • Undyed Australian wool (rich texture, natural lanolin scent, varied natural colors)
  • Organic cotton (lightweight, versatile, takes natural dyes beautifully)
  • Jute and sisal (sturdy structure, distinctive texture, earthen aroma)
  • Raffia and sea grass (flexibility, subtle variations in tone)

Each fiber carries different properties of strength, flexibility, and texture—creating distinctive tactile experiences in woven or knotted forms.

Selection of Australian timber varieties showing grain patterns

Reclaimed Timber

Wood carries the narrative of its growth in every grain line and knot. We exclusively use reclaimed timber:

  • Tasmanian Blackwood (rich honey tones with distinctive grain patterns)
  • Victorian Ash (straight grain, pale color that deepens with age and sunlight)
  • Recycled Jarrah (deep reddish tones, extremely durable)
  • Salvaged Eucalyptus (varied species with unique character and color)

Each timber species offers different densities, grain patterns, and tonal qualities—evolving over time as it responds to its environment.

Hand-selecting natural materials from a local supplier

Our Sourcing Philosophy

We believe the energy of materials flows from their origins through to the finished piece. This is why we:

  • Source locally wherever possible, reducing carbon footprint and supporting regional makers
  • Partner with suppliers who share our commitment to ethical harvesting practices
  • Prioritize reclaimed, repurposed, and recycled materials to honor existing resources
  • Visit suppliers personally to maintain relationships and ensure quality

By knowing our materials deeply—their origins, their journey, their inherent qualities—we create pieces that carry integrity in every fiber and grain.

Living With Natural Materials

Natural Aging

Natural materials aren't static—they evolve, responding to light, humidity, and use. Timber deepens in tone, fibers soften, ceramics develop a subtle patina. This living quality is part of their beauty.

Mindful Touch

The oils from your hands become part of wooden objects over time. Regular, gentle handling of timber pieces helps develop a rich patina that enhances their character.

Elemental Awareness

Natural materials respond to their environment. Position fiber works away from direct sunlight to prevent fading. Keep wooden objects away from heating vents to prevent cracking.

Renewal Practices

Periodically refresh natural materials with appropriate care: wood oil for timber pieces, gentle dusting for textiles, careful washing for ceramics. These rituals deepen your relationship with each object.
